AVIE FELIX
Avie Felix is a curator, teacher, writer, multi-disciplinary artist, and advocate of gender, culture and environment. A graduate of Art Studies from the University of the Philippines and a candidate for a master's degree in Art History at the same university, she taught cinema studies and interdisciplinary courses at the UP Film Institute for five years while serving as coordinator of the UP Film Center’s Cine Adarna and Extension Services. A recent fellow to Curatorial Intensive Manila, facilitated by Independent Curators International - New York, Avie has curated more than 30 exhibitions since 2012. Aside from formal curatorial training as a graduate student of Art History, she also participated in Japan Foundation and Vargas Museum’s Curatorial Workshop in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
Avie professionally writes about art, film, gender, fashion and feminism, and occasionally prose and poetry. As a writer, Avie contributed to major glossy magazines such as Mega, Preview, Invoice and the online magazine POC.net. Her academic writings were published and presented in local and international journals and conferences. She is currently writing her second anthology of poems with personal illustrations.
In 2009, Avie co-founded Avie founded a year-round art school for all ages in 2009 called the Young Artists' Studio (YAS), where she serves as program director. As program director of YAS, Avie is in charge of the curricula, programs and students' exhibit. In curating YAS exhibitions, Avie discovered her interest in creating experience to exhibition viewers. In 2012, Avie started to manage a small art space (vMeme Art Projects) where she is able to collaborate with artists, art collectives and organizations. Most of the projects she has curated are in the interest of creating opportunities and venues for advocacy-oriented artists to expose them to a wider audience.
As a writer, Avie has worked in different forms and genres, having contributed academic, research and feature articles as well as literary works. Her work in the visual arts are focused on new media and exploration of materials not commonly used in fine art forms. Avie also has a body of work in performing arts as actress, choreographer, radio show host, writer and producer.
